Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and players have encountered plenty of interesting independent titles. But, one stands out for its offbeat concept. Named Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game features a protagonist that is actually a turd attempting to navigate to a restroom. In case you're wondering, "Unko" translates to "poop."
The gameplay is easy to grasp: just use a one button to leap. Across 150 challenges, encounter tough enemies and access a store to buy customizations for your fecal avatar.
Plan your jumps precisely, since one mistake requires restarting the level. Jump using floating orbs to hurl the poop higher, traverse crumbling surfaces, and touch triggers to unlock secret routes. Collect currency for buying tougher stages in which things intensifies.
Visually, the experience boasts vibrant level designs and catchy background music. The simple graphics with moving geometric shapes could recall gamers of beloved games like Earthbound.
Although tough to recall similar titles where you are a dung character, video games have long featured fecal matter. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, players create grenades from character waste. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ manure as fertilizer. Unsurprisingly, such content shows up heavily in the South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Regardless of its goofy concept, Unko Technica has already earned notable recognition, including taking top honors at a major publisher's game competition in 2023. This trial version is available currently on Steam, with the full game scheduled to arrive on computers this November.
